SCIENCE Y9 Flashcards
What is photosynthesis?
It is the process by which green plants, algae, and some bacteria convert light energy usually from the sun, into chemical energy.
Where does photosynthesis occur?
In the leaves, or chloroplasts
What does photosynthesis produce?
glucose and oxygen
What is chlorophyll?
Chlorophyll is a green pigment found in chloroplasts of plants, algae and cyanobacteria. It’s job is to absorb light most efficiently in the blue and red wavelength
What is light intensity?
The amount of light
As the light intensity increases, the rate of photosynthesis increases.
(True or False)
True
Where is chloroplast found?
In the middle part of the leaf
How does carbon dioxide enter the leaf?
The carbon dioxide diffuses into the leaf from the air through the tiny holes in the leaf called stomata
Gases diffuse in and out of the stem through stomata.
(True or False)
False. (through the leaf)
How to test if a plant has starch?
1-Add the water in a beaker and boil it.
2-Put the leaf into the boiling water.
3-After two minutes, turn of the boiler.
4-Put ethanol in the test tube.
5-Remove the leaf and put into ethanol
6-Put the test tube of ethanol on top the boiling water.
7-The green color should dissolve, then remove it carefully.
8-Dip into warm water to soften it.
9-Spread the leaf on a tile.
10-Spread iodine on the leaf using a dropper.
11-If the leaf contains starch, it will go blue-back
What is duckweed?
Duckweed is a small aquatic plant that grows on water’s surface, typically in standing water during warm months, with free-floating roots unlike other aquatic plants.
Where is carbon found?
In the atmosphere, inside the Earth’s crust and in living organisms
Is carbon a fossil fuel?
nah
Name fossil fuels
Wood. coal, charcoal, coke, petroleum, etc
Why is carbon important?
Carbon can regulate Earth’s temperature, make up the food that sustain us, and provide energy that fuels our global economy.
