SS Vikings (houses) Flashcards
What were their houses made from?
Walls were made from wooden planks. Stone was sometimes used. Roofs were thatched with straw or reeds. Some houses’ walls and roofs were made of turf. The floors were made of hard-packed earth.
What did the houses look like?
They were long and narrow, and were called longhouses. The roofs were steeply sloping so rain and snow would fall off.
What were the windows like?
The windows were just holes cut in walls, which were covered with wooden shutters.
What were the houses like inside?
There was one big room which the family ate, slept and did their household chores in. There were benches on every wall, which were used to sleep on.
Where was the fireplace?
In the centre of the room. There was no chimney for the smoke to escape the house from.
Where were the other belongings kept?
Other belongings were kept in wooden chests, and clothes were hung on hangers.
