The right to vote.

A group making up more than half of a larger group.
Whig Party
A political party organized by Henry Clay; they believed the federal government should help the economy and promote business.
Democratic Party
A U.S political party dating from the 1820s to present that at first spoke out for small farmers and workers against moneyed businessmen and whose policies have changed over the years.

The practice of giving supporters government jobs.

An act passed by South Carolina that declared that the tariff of 1812 was unconstitutional

-The regions grew more alike in their eagerness to expand voting rights to nearly all white men
- first states to give voting privileges to white males who did not own property were in West.
-In these states, any white man over 21 could vote.
-By 1840, voter turnout was nearly 80 percent.

Jackson won popular vote
There was no clear election outcome due to none of the candidates winning the majority vote (more than half the electoral votes)
House chose JQ Adams
corrupt bargain 1824
The House of Representation had to pick the President from the top 3 candidates.
Even though Clay was out of the running, he played an important role in influencing the results, urging the House to vote for Adams. Adams then won the Presidency and named Clay his secretary of states.
Jackson and the other candidate accused Adams and Clay of making a corrupt bargain.
causes of panic of 1837
Banked issued too many loans and investments
British pulled back on lending to the us due to their own economy
Speculators were borrowing more and more money to borrow and drove land prices up
Speculators rushed to banks to exchange paper money for gold and silver but banks did not have enough, leaving people to go broke

Led to a great depression that lasted 5 years
90% of American factories closed
Unemployment was widespread

The bank is necessary, without the bank everything would be chaos. (he was the president of the second bank)
