Squints Flashcards
what is exotropia
divergent squint- one eye turned outwards
what is esotropia
convergent squint- one eye turned inwards
diagnosis
corneal reflection- if it is asymmetrical then it is a squint; cover test
what is the cover test
movement of the uncovered eye to take up fixation as other eye is covered- manifest squint. a latent squint is revealed by movement of covered eye as cover is removed
which is the more common squint
esotropia (convergent)
what can esotropia be due to
hypermetropia
which type of squint develops later on in childhood
exotropia
management squints
3 Os- optical (assess refractive state after cyclopentolate), orthoptic (patch good eye encourages use of squinting eye), Operations
what is a paralytic squint
diplopia looking in the direction of the pull of paralysed muscle
what is a pseudosquint
wide epicanthic folds give appearance of a squint
what is ambylopia
when connections are not complete between eye and visual cortex in the visual development period. lazy eye
characteristics ambylopia
reduced visual acuity in the absence of other organic explanation for reduced vision. usually unilateral
cause of ambylopia
squint, refractive error
treatment ambylopia
correct refractive error, reverse amblyopia- occlusion of better seeing eye; orthoptic management; surgery
