Sprains and strains Flashcards
What is a sprain?
Stretch and/or tear of a ligament
What is a strain?
Twist, pull and/or tear of a muscle and/or tendon
How are sprains and strains classified?
Based on a grading system from I-III I = the least severe
What is a grade I sprain?
Ligament is overstretched with only micro-tears possible. Fully recovery 1-2 days
What is the difference between a grade I strain and a grade I sprain?
The sift tissue it affects: sprain will affect the ligament and strain will affect the muscle and/or tendon The classification is the same (only micro-tears possible etc)
What is a grade II strain?
- Partial tear of muscle and/or tendon
- Immediate onset of all inflammatory signs
- May disturb joint stability
- Function will be limited
- Full recoveery takes months
Most important to know
What is a grade III sprain?
- Complete rupture of ligament
- very high joint instability
- Immediate actute pain
- Often can hear a pop, crack, click
- All cardinal signs of inflmmation
- Requires immobalisation and/or surgery
What is the difference in a Grade III sprain and strain?
- Sprain: Very high joint instability
- Strain: inability to contract muscle and separation may be evident
What is a grade II strain?
- Partial tear of ligament
- Immediate onset of all inflmmatory signs
- Might disturb joint stability
- Function will be limited
- recovery may take many months
What does PRICE stand for?
- Protection
- Rest
- Ice
- Compression
- Elevation
