Pain (generally) Flashcards
Name the 5 Components of pain
Sensory Autonomic Motor Emotional Cognitive
What are the 3 types of sensory nerves?
A delta fibres A beta fibres C Fibres
Which fibres are myelinated and have a large diameter?
A beta
What is the first stage in the brain connections for acute pain?
A delta fibres carry impulses to the grey matter in the spinal cord
What happens in acute pain when the impulses reach the grey matter?
The impulse passes up the lateral spinothalamic tract and CROSSES over sides of the vertebrae
Which parts of the brain do the impulses in acute pain travel to?
First to the thalamus then to the cerebral cortex
Why does the impulse in acute pain go to the parts of the brain it does?
So pain is perceived quickly and action taken
What are pain receptors called?
Nociceptors
What are nociceptors?
sensory receptors that respond specifically to tissue damage
What 4 things are a stimulus for nociceptors?
Chemicals, Pressure, temperature and inflammation. PICT
What parts of the brain are involved when pain in chronic?
First the hypothalamus then limbic system then the thalamus
What is the consequence of the impulses going to the parts of the brain they do in chronic pain?
Slower recording of pain and associated with a stress response and emotions
What are the 3 types of pain?
Transient
Acute
Chronic
(TAC)
What are the 3 descriptors of Transient pain?
Minimal Tissue damage
Sharp pain, diffuse ache then fades
Prevents further damage
What is acute pain?
- Clear start time limited time span and localised
- Autonomic changes
- Tissue damage
- Intense then diffuse pain
- Escape and protection
