Sprains Flashcards
What are the common sprains in sport?
Classic lateral ankle sprain inversion injury (involves anterior tibiofibular ligament)
what are the clinical gradings for sprains?
Grade 1: fibre overstretching (mild)
Grade 2: Rupture of fibres (moderate)
Grade 3: Total ligament rupture (severe)
What ligaments are associated with lateral ankle sprains?
70% are isolated ATFL injuries
30% have accompanying calcaneofibular (CFL) ligament injury)
What is associated with a medial ankle sprain?
Injury to strong deltoid ligament, eversion ankle sprain
What is the difference between a partial and a complete medial ankle sprain?
Partial involves injury of the superficial (weak) bands: tibiocalcaneal, tibiospring, tibionavicular
Complete involves injury to the deep (strong) bands: anterior tibiotalar, deep posterior tibiotalar
