  • Cricketers ‘walking’ when they know they are out.

Problems with sportsmanship today

A
  • Winning is becoming increasingly more important.
  • E.g. when winning, a team might waste time, make subs, run the clock down to ensure a win- all within the rules.
  • Some players earn a reputation for diving (simulation), in order to unfairly win a penalty for their team.

What is gamesmanship?

A
  • The art of winning games by cunning means but without actually breaking the rules.
  • Fine line between gamesmanship and cheating.
  • Therefore it involves stretching the rules to the limit and failing to follow etiquette.

  • Delaying play at a restart to get back into defence.
  • Time wasting when ahead in a game.
  • Verbally ‘sledging’ an opponent to distract/ upset them.

What is positive deviancy?

A
  • Behaviour which is outside the norms of society but with no intent to harm or break the rules.
  • It involves over-adherence to the norms and expectations of society.

E.g. overtraining/ playing when injured.

What is negative deviancy?

A
  • Behaviour that goes against the norms and has a detrimental effect in individuals and society in general.
  • Motivation to win at all costs encourages performers to lack moral restraint.

E.g. performance enhancing drugs, deliberately fouling a player, accepting a bribe, diving to win a penalty.
