Sportsmanship & Gamesmanship Flashcards
Characteristics of sportsmanship
- Spirit and etiquette of a sport.
- Playing by the written rules of the sport.
- High code of ethics.
- Maintaining self-control.
- Treating others fairly.
- Respecting opponents and officials.
Examples of sportsmanship
- Kicking the ball out of play at an injury.
- Returning the ball to opponents after it has been kicked out.
- Cricketers ‘walking’ when they know they are out.
- Players returning to a former club not celebrating when they score a goal (good grace).
Problems with sportsmanship today
- Winning is becoming increasingly more important.
- E.g. when winning, a team might waste time, make subs, run the clock down to ensure a win- all within the rules.
- Some players earn a reputation for diving (simulation), in order to unfairly win a penalty for their team.
Problems with sportsmanship pt.2
- Players questioning the referees decisions.
- Players refusing to follow etiquette.
E.g. Suarez and Evra refusing to shake hands despite it being part of the FA’s respect campaign.
How can sportsmanship be encouraged?
- NGB campaigns- The FA ‘Respect’ campaign.
- Awards for fair play.
- Technology to help officials make the correct decision.
- Punishing foul play.
- Positive role models.
- Rigorous drug testing.
What is gamesmanship?
- The art of winning games by cunning means but without actually breaking the rules.
- Fine line between gamesmanship and cheating.
- Therefore it involves stretching the rules to the limit and failing to follow etiquette.
Examples of gamesmanship
- Delaying play at a restart to get back into defence.
- Time wasting when ahead in a game.
- Verbally ‘sledging’ an opponent to distract/ upset them.
- Psyching an opponent out in a pre-match media conference.
- Appealing to a ref etc.
What is the Win ethic?
- Links to the sporting ethic of ‘win at all costs’, where coming second is not viewed as an option and outcome is all that matters.
Vince Lombardi= ‘Winning isn’t a sometimes thing, its an all-time thing’.
What is Bill Shankley’s quote?
“Football isn’t about life and death. It’s far more important than that”.
Win ethic today
- No drawn games.
- Managers fired if unsuccessful.
- High amounts of deviance.
- Media praise for winners.
- Media negativity for losers.
What is positive deviancy?
- Behaviour which is outside the norms of society but with no intent to harm or break the rules.
- It involves over-adherence to the norms and expectations of society.
E.g. overtraining/ playing when injured.
(Paula Radcliffe- Athens Olympics).
What is negative deviancy?
- Behaviour that goes against the norms and has a detrimental effect in individuals and society in general.
- Motivation to win at all costs encourages performers to lack moral restraint.
E.g. performance enhancing drugs, deliberately fouling a player, accepting a bribe, diving to win a penalty.
