Definition of Ability
Inherited, stable traits that determine an individual’s potential to learn or acquire a skill.
Definition of Skill
A learned action/learned behaviour with the intention of bringing about pre- determined results, with maximum certainty and minimum outlay of time and energy.
Definition of an Outcome Goal
A goal that focuses on the end result only.
Definition of a Performance Goal
A goal where personal standards are to be achieved. There is no comparison with others.
Definition of Input
Information from the display (senses), selective attention.
Definition of Decision Making
Selection of appropriate response from memory. The role of long term and short term memory.
Definition of Output
Information sent to muscles to carry out the response.
Definition of Feedback
Received via self (intrinsic) and/or others (extrinsic).
Definition of Arousal
A physical and mental (physiological and psychological) state of alertness/readiness, varying from deep sleep to intense excitement/alertness.
Definition of Deep Breathing
Relaxation technique which involves a performer exaggerating their breaths in and out.
Definition of Mental Rehearsal
Relaxation technique which involves the performer picturing themselves performing the skill perfectly or imagining positive outcomes before attempting it.
Definition of Visualisation
A relaxation technique to control mental thoughts which involves the performer imagining themselves in a calm, relaxing place.
Definition of Positive Self-Talk
Developing cognitive positive thoughts about your own performance.
Definition of Direct Aggression
Aggressive act which involves physical contact with others.
Definition of Indirect Aggression
Aggression which does not involve physical contact. The aggression is taken out on an object to gain advantage.
Characteristics of an Introvert
- Shy/quiet
- Thoughtful
- Enjoy being on their own.
Tend to play individual sports, that need concentration/precision, need low arousal.
Characterisitcs of an Extrovert
- Enjoy interaction with others/sociable/aroused by others
- Enthusiastic/talkative
- Prone to boredom when isolated/by themselves.
Tend to play team sports, that are fast paced, need low concentration, use gross skills.
Definition of Intrinsic Motivation
The drive that comes from within.
Definition of Extrinsic Motivation
The drive to perform well or to win in order to gain external rewards.
