Sports Injury Flashcards
Define rotator cuff disease
Rotator cuff disease is a continuum of disease consisting of
1. Shoulder Impingement Syndrome
2. Calcific tendinitis
3. Rotator cuff tear
4. Rotator cuff arthropathy
Define shoulder impingement syndrome
A clinical syndrome due to inflamed tendons of the rotator cuff muscles as they pass through the subacromial space
List 4 clinical features of shoulder impingement syndrome
- Pain exaggerated with overhead activities
- Night pain and difficulty sleeping on the affected side
- Tenderness to palpation over the greater tuberosity
- Impingement signs E.g: Hawkin Kennedy +ve
State the rotator cuff muscle function and its respective special test
State 4 characteristic features of rotator cuff arthropathy
It is the end stage of rotator cuff disease characterized by:
1. Wasting of rotator cuff muscle
2. Superior subluxation of humerus head
3. Massive rotator cuff tear
4. Glenohumeral joint arthritis
Define Frozen Shoulder
Progressive pain and global stiffness of the shoulder
Usually resolving spontaneously after 18 months
List the classical stages of Frozen Shoulder (3 stages)
- Pain
- Stiffness
- Thawing
Define lateral epicondylitis (Tennis elbow)
Tendinosis of lateral epicondyle due to overuse
What is the difference between tendinosis and tendinitis?
