Arthroplasty Flashcards
Definition of Osteoarthritis
A chronic disorder of the synovial joint in which
- There is progressive softening and disintegration of articular cartilage accompanied by new growth of cartilage and bone at the joint margins (osteophytes),
- Cyst formation and
- Sclerosis in the subchondral bone,
- Mild synovitis, and
- Capsular fibrosis
Identify A, B, C, D, E
A -> Osteophyte at the margin
B -> Sclerosis of Subchondral bone
C -> Subchondral Cysts
D -> Asymmetrical loss of joint space (cartilage erosion)
E -> Loose bodies may be present (FRAGMENTATION of osteochondral surface)
Conservative & Surgery
Management of OA
Conservative:
R -> Rest
A -> Activity Modification
M -> Medication (Anti-inflammatory medication, supplements like glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate)
P -> Physical therapy
o
S -> Steroid injection
Surgery (If failed medical treatment):
1. Arthroscopic debridement
2. Realignment osteotomy
3. Arthroplasty (Joint replacement)
Define Arthroplasty
Surgical refashioning of a joint aiming to relief pain and retain or restore movement
What is avascular necrosis of the hip?
It is the death of bone due to ischemia
Causes of AVN
Mnemonic (ASEPTIC)
A -> Alcohol, Arthritis (RA), Amyloidosis
S -> Steroid, SLE, Sickle cell disease
E -> Erlenmeyer flask (Gaucher’s disease)
P -> Pancreatitis
T -> Trauma
I -> Idiopathic, Infection
C -> Caisson disease
Common site of AVN
- Head of femur
- Femoral Condyle
- Head of humerus
- Proximal poles of scaphoid
- Talus
