What are acute injuries?
Occur spontaneously and are very painful.
Due to an action or event
Eg concussion, ankle sprain, corked thigh, dislocation
What is an overuse injury?
Occurs over time, slowly. Happens from overuse. Take longer to heal. Damage to the bone, muscle or ligament.
Eg shin splits, tennis elbow, stress fractures
What are the four stages of overuse?
- Pain in affected area after physical activity
- Pain during physical activity, not restricting performance
- Pain during physical activity, restricting performance
- Chronic and persistent pain
Who is at most risk to overuse injuries?
Children and teens
How do you prevent overuse injuries?
Prepare
Play smart
Rest up
Training
What is a strain?
A muscle strain, or pulled muscle occurs when your muscle is overstretched or torn. Caused by not warming up, poor conditioning, over exertion ect
What is a sprain?
A sprain is a stretching of ligaments.
What are the grades strain and sprains are classified into?
Grade 1: some fibres torn, some loss of strength
Grade 2: many fibres torn, pain and swelling
Grade 3: all fibres torn and need surgery
What is the ACL, what does it do?
Anterior Cruciate ligament ensures that the tibia can’t move to far forward
What is the PCL, what does it do?
Posterior Cruciate ligament to prevent the femur from sliding off the anterior edge of the tibia and to prevent the tibia from displacing posterior to the femur
What is the patella?
The kneecap. A thick, circular-triangular bone which articulates with the femur (thigh bone) and covers and protects the anterior articular surface of the knee joint.

What are the symptoms of a head injury?
Loss of consciousness Vomiting Persistent drowsiness Loss of memory Confused/disturbed behaviour Bleeding or clear discharge from ears
What are the symptoms of a soft tissue injury?
Pain
Swelling
Loss of movement
What does R.I.C.E.R stand for?
Rest Ice Compression Elevation Refer
