Skeletal System Flashcards
Are bones living
Bones are living structures capable of growth, adaption and repair
Do bones grow
Yes bones grow in length ages 18-15 for girls and 16-18 for boys
Do bones have a hollow centre?
Some bones have a hollow centre that contains bone marrow that produces bloods cells
What are joints?
Immovable fibrous joints
slightly movable cartilaginous joints
freely movable joints synovial
joints occur when two or more bones meet and join together
What is connective tissue?
Connective tissues play a large part in stabilizing the joints of the body. They help create movement at the joints and act as a lubricant and shock absorber out between bones the three main types of connective tissue are cartilage tendons and ligaments
What are the five main functions of the skeletal system?
Provides framework Helps with movement Protects vital organs Blood cell formation Stores mineral salts, especially calcium
What’s are all the body systems?
Nervous Endocrine Skin Respiratory Circulatory Excretory Digestive Skeletal Muscular Reproductive
What’s the muscular systems three main functions?
To create movement
to maintain good posture
to maintain bodily functions
How many muscles does a person have?
More than 600
What are the types of muscle fiber?
Fast twitch(white) Slow twitch(red)
What are fast twitch muscle fibers used for?
Fast twitch muscle fibers are used for power, speed and strength activities such as sprinting jumping and throwing. These muscle fibers contract rapidly with a lot of speed and force
What are slow twitch muscle fibers used for?
Slow twitch muscle fibers are used for longer duration activities such a swimming running long-distance or cycling continuously for five minutes or more these muscles which control our posture are generally made up of a larger percent of slow twitch fibers
Can people be born with more slow twitch fibers? If so what are these people potentially better at?
Yes these people potentially better suited to long distance or duration events such as cross country running and distance swimming
How many fast or slow twitch fibers to people usually have?
Most people have an even distribution of fiber type however through training specific fibres we can increase their capabilities
What are three types of muscles?
Skeletal muscles
smooth muscles and
cardiac muscles
