Attitude definition
A predisposition to act in a particular way towards something or someone in a person’s environment
Attitude object
The focus of an individual’s attitude
Attitude formation
-associating with others and picking up opinions and values
-learn from S/Os
- can be conditional
Causes of negative attitudes
- negative experience/ failure
-fear of injury - negative role models
-low self confidence
-stereotypical images
Triadic model- cognitive
Most deep rooted part of attitude and simply what we think. Represents beliefs.
Triadic model - affective
Concerns feelings and emotions of a player.
Triadic model- behavioural
Reflects what you do. Shown by actions and habits of a performer
Factors affecting positive attitude
-past experience
-peer group
-media/role models
-socialisation
-parental influence
-culture, race, religion
Persuasion
An effective communication to promote change
Methods of persuasion
-having a person of status deliver the idea
-high quality of message
-must be aware of current attitude
-situation/context
Cognitive dissonance
Giving new information to a performer to cause unease and motivate change
