Anxiety
A level of nerves and irrational thinking
Competitive trait anxiety
Suffering from nerves before most games, part of genetic makeup
Competitive state anxiety
A nervous response to a specific sporting situation, more temporary. Can vary throughout a game
LINK: an individual with high trait anxiety is more likely to experience high state anxiety when faced with a stressful situation.
If you have the trait, you are more likely to get the state!
Somatic anxiety
A physiological response to a threat such as increased heart rate
Cognitive anxiety
A psychological response such as worrying about losing
Questionnaire
A set of questions to measure or assess something, in this case anxiety
Sport competition anxiety test (SCAT)
A questionnaire used by sports psychologists to measure anxiety
Competitive sport anxiety inventory (CSAI)
A questionnaire user by sports psychologists to measure anxiety
Observation
Gaining a measure of (in this case) anxiety by watching the performer
Aggression
Intent to harm outside the rules, hostile behaviour
Assertion
Well motivated behaviour within the rules
Instrumental aggression
Has an intent but within the rules
Instinct theory
When aggression is spontaneous and innate
Catharsis
Cleansing the emotions using sport as an outlet for aggression
Aggressive cue hypothesis
Suggests that aggression is caused by learned trigger
