Sport Injury Terminology Flashcards
Sport injury
Damage to the tissues of the body that is a result of sport, exercise or PA
Physical activity
moving or using body in numerous forms of activity (outdoors, fitness exercise, playing, training, PE)
Acute injury
Sudden onset
Single event
Characterized by immediate bleeding
Overuse injury
gradual onset - cumulative
degenerative - aging
Direct contact
Indirect
Noncontact
Direct blow to injured area
Contact to the body other than injured area
No contact with others or object; poor movement control
Stiffness
Yield Point
Creep
Tissue ability to resist load (high stiffness = greater elasticity)
Limit threshold of elasticity and onto plastic behaviour
Property or shape deformation of tissues that occurs with constant load application over time
Mechanical Forces
Compression
Tension
Shearing
Bending: a combination fo compression and tension
Torsion: twisting of ends of structure in opposite directions
