1936 - Hitler used the Olympic Games as propaganda to promote the superiority of the Aryan race and nazi ideologies. Star was African American Jesse Owens.

1968- Mexico Olympics 2 athletes raised a gloved first during the national anthem to protest treatment of African-Americans in the US. Human rights badges were also worn
1972- Munich- 8 Palestinian terrorists killed 2 members of the Israeli team and took 9 hostage (all got killed) . They wanted the release of 200 Palestinians who were in the Israeli jails.

1980- USA boycott Olympics in Moscow in protest of USSRs invasion of Afghanistan
1984- USA hosting Olympics, USSR boycotted it claiming security risks.
Examples of sport for diplomacy
Ping pong Diplomacy- table tennis used to ease relations between USA and China during the Cold War. The American table tennis team visited for 10 days and China returned the visit a year later.
Barack Obama and Raul Castro watched baseball together. The countries had been enemies since 1959.

London Olympics used to discuss the role of women in Saudi society. They sent for the first time females to London 2012
Sport promoting a country on a world stage
Countries that do not have traditional sport backgrounds beginning to host major events. The governments want to do this to promote their country on world stage in front of millions of people worldwide.
