Anaphoric Referencing
When a word or phase refers to something mentioned earlier in the the discourse
(Michael went to the bank. He was annoyed because it was closed)
Cataphoric Referencing
Occurs when a word or phrase refers to something mentioned later in the discourse
(Although I phone her every week, my mother complains I don’t keep in touch often enough)
Exophoric Referencing
Occurs when a word or phrase refers to something outside the discourse
Idiolect
An individual’s style of speaking or ‘linguistic fingerprint’
IPA
A series of phonemes, represented by the International Phonetic Alphabet
Mode
The medium of communication
(Speaking or writing)
Non-Verbal Behaviour
Eye contact and facial expressions
Paralanguage
Voice quality and other vocal effects
(Whispering, laughter, ect..)
Phonetics
The study of sounds
Phonology
Looking at the sound system of a language and comparing it with the phonological system of other languages
Phonological Repertoires
The range of language forms and styles that regional speakers have access to
Received Pronunciation
The accent traditionally associated with high social status
Sociolect
A defined use of language as a result of membership to a social group
