Phrase
One or more words functioning as a unit in a sentence, usually containing a head word and accompanying modifiers
Head word
The main word in a phrase
Modifiers
The words that describe the head word or give more information about it
Noun phrase
Usually has a noun or a pronoun as its head word
Verb phrase
Usually contains a main verb and any accompanying auxillary verbs
Clause
Usually contains both a verb phrase and other types of phrase.
Made up of 5 elements
(Subject, verb, object, complement, adverbial)
Simple sentences
- Contains only one clause
- Includes a single main verb and a combination of some or all of the other clause elements
Compound sentence
- Two or more simple sentences joined together by a coordinating conjuction
- Each clause makes sense on its own and each is of equal importance
Ellipsis
Occurs when part of a sentence is left out in order to avoid repetiton
Complex sentences
One of more of the clauses in the sentence is of lesser importance than the main clause, which is called a subordinate clause and cannot be a sentence on its own
Declarative sentences
Statements
- Usually in S-V-O order
- Information texts
- Narrative texts
- Descriptive texts
Interrogative sentences
Ask questions
- Associated with direct address
- Advertisements
Imperative sentences
Give instructions
- Usually begin with the verb
- Instructional texts
Exclamatory sentences
Emphatic sentences, indicated by the use of an exclamation mark
