Spleen - Location, Structure, Function
A
Location: LUQ posterior to the stomach, resting on the left colic flexure of the large intestine. Deep to ribs 9-11.
Structure: Large lymphoid organ. Has 2 surfaces with several impressions from surrounding organs. It has a very friable texture.
Function: Site for lymphocyte proliferation, surveillance + response. Blood filter. Reservoir for blood, platelets and monocytes. Recycles by-products of red blood cell breakdown. Erythropoiesis in the foetus.
