Spirometry Flashcards
Forced Vital Capacity(FVC)
measures the largest amount of air that can be expired after maximal inhalation.
Forced Expiratory Volume in 1s(FEV1)
Fraction of VC expired during the first second of maximal expiration
FEV1/FVC ratios
Normal Lung = > 80% (80-120%)
Obstructive lung = < 70%, FEV1 = < 75% predicted
Restrictive lung = >70% FEV1%, TLC decreases, FVC < 80%, FEV1 < 80%
Obstructive Lung Disease
FEV1% < 70%, FEV1 < 80%, FVC can be normal or < 80%, (Obstructive pts will have decrease flows)
Restrictive Lung Diseases
FEV1% >70%, FEV1 < 80% and FVC <80% or normal (restrictive pts have volume issues)
RV and TLC volumes
Normal - 80-120%
Restrictive = <80%
Obstructive = > 120%
RV/TLC ratio
> 35% = Acute Asthmatics, air trapping
<35% with increased TLC = COPD, chronic hyperinflation
What is a Helium Dilution Test
closed circuit test used to measure alveolar volume
What types of patients are not indicated for Nitrogen Washout Test
COPD pts because the test is administered with 100% Oxygen
DLCO values
Normal = 80-120%
Abnormal = below 80%
