Lung Capacities Flashcards
What is Functional Residual Capacity(FRC)
volume of air remaining in the lungs after normal passive exhalation.
ERV + RV
Normal FRC
About 2.5-3L
What is Inspiratory Capacity(IC)
Volume of air that can maximally be inhales into lungs after normally Vt expiration.
Vt + IRV
Normal IC
About 3.5L
What is Vital Capacity(VC)
change in volume of lung after maximal inspiration followed by maximal expiration.
(IRV + Vt + ERV) - RV
What is Expiratory Capacity(EC)?
total volume of air a person can expire after a normal inspiration.
Vt + ERV
Normal VC
3-5L or 50 ml/Kg
What is Total Lung Capacity(TLC)
total volume of air in the lungs at full inhalation.
IRV + Vt + ERV + RV or IC + FRC
Normal TLC
Male = ~ 6L
Female = ~ 4.5L
Normal EC
About 2L
