Q

What is the Biblical model for church governance?

A

Elders lead and guide the church - 1 Peter 5:1-4 says that they are chosen from among the church, that they “watch over” the flock God has given them by being eager to serve. So Elders serve through leading our church. The criteria for Elders is found in Titus 1:5-16,
Overseers (episkopos)(pastor)

Ephesians 4:11 says that pastors are given to the church to build up the body as they teach. Act 20:28 says that they shepherd people. The qualifications for a pastor are found in 1 Timothy 3:2-7.

Deacons are servant leaders in the church who serve the general needs of the church. The qualifications for a deacon are found in 1 Timothy 3:8-13. At Sagebrush our small group leaders serve as deacons.

Q

Based on scripture, what roles are women able to have in ministry?

A

Like Paul says in 1 Timothy 2:12, as long a woman does not assume spiritual authority over a man, the position is allowed. When talking about elders, pastor/overseers, and deacons…we only see that deacons are able to be either men or women 1 Timothy 3. For elders and pastors, only men.

so small group leader, student director, kids director, or worship leader.

Q

What is the biblical process for church discipline?

A

Matthew 18, Jesus lays out a 4 step process.
1. One on one, you go to the person that’s sinned against you.
2. If they don’t listen, take one or two with you as witnesses.
3. If they still refuse, tell it to the church (in our case, that’d be the person’s small group).
4. And still, treat them as you would a pagan or a tax collector.
The goal even with the last step, is restoration. So in the last step, they are not part of the church, but we are to still love them (they’re not cut off or shunned), because Jesus spent time with pagan and tax collectors.
