A
- Joint injury: impairments/dysfunctions, not disease
- Impairments are increases or decreases in motion from the expected normal with aberrant movement
- Hypomobility: treat with manipulation, stretching, promotion of activities that encourage full ROM
- Hypermobility: increased movement, laxity, instability; treat with stabilization and correction of limitation in neighboring joints
- Timely PT intervention addressing impairments may slow/reverse degenerative process & negate need for surgery
- PT’s primary role = exam at tx of impairments
MD primary role = diagnosis & tx of disease - Impairment is the cause of pain; goal of PT should be to correct impairment unless pain is limiting factor
- Key to understanding impairment is understanding anatomy & biomechanics
- It is the patient’s responsibility to restore, maintain & enhance their health
