A
  1. Joint injury: impairments/dysfunctions, not disease
  2. Impairments are increases or decreases in motion from the expected normal with aberrant movement
  3. Hypomobility: treat with manipulation, stretching, promotion of activities that encourage full ROM
  4. Hypermobility: increased movement, laxity, instability; treat with stabilization and correction of limitation in neighboring joints
  5. Timely PT intervention addressing impairments may slow/reverse degenerative process & negate need for surgery
  6. PT’s primary role = exam at tx of impairments
MD primary role = diagnosis & tx of disease
  7. Impairment is the cause of pain; goal of PT should be to correct impairment unless pain is limiting factor
  8. Key to understanding impairment is understanding anatomy & biomechanics
  9. It is the patient’s responsibility to restore, maintain & enhance their health
