Spincal cord structure: laminae Flashcards
The dorsal horn makes up which laminae?
I-VI
What is dorsal horn function?
all sensory
Laminae I
Marginal zone
Marginal zone
I: resonsible for pain and temp
What zone is Substantia gelatinosa
II:
What does zone II house?
Interneurons for pain/sensation on periphery
Where do we process mechanical, visceral and noxious stimuli?
III-V
This zone is prominent only at enlargements
VI
Neurons from these laminae give rise to anterolateral tract
I, V, VII
What laminae is the Intermediate zone?
VII
What two areas are in the Intermediate zone?
Medial; clarks nucleus
Lateral: Intermediolateral cell column and Sacral autonomic nuclei
What does the Intermediolateral cell column contain and for which areas of sp cd?
Pregang SNS
T1-L2/3
What does the sacral autonomic nucleu contain and for which cell column?
Pregang PNS
S2-4
Clark’s nucleus is for which areas of sp cd, what does it give rise to?
C8-L3
gives rise to dorsal spinocerebellar tract
What laminae make up the ventral horn?
ventral VII, VIII and IX
What is the motor neuronal gropu that innervates the truncal and limb muscles?
Laminae IX in ventral horn
Symptoms of Dorsal rhizotomy
Hypesthesia or anesthesia
No sensation
What occurs if you sever all dorsal roots?
If you sever all dorsal roots the extremity is virtually paralyzed
What happens if you only sever muscles afferents of dorsal root?
Severed muscle afferents saw limb could still function
What happens if you sever cutaneous afferents?
Severed cutaneous afferent and saw minimal motor use
Symptoms of Ventral Root lesions
Weakness or flaccid paralysis and atrophy of muscles
What happens if you involve autonomic pregans in a ventral root lesion?
Autonomic dysfunction
In a spinal cord hemisection: do you lose fine touch, vibration and proprioception IPSI or CONTRA to lesion? Above or Below?
IPSI to and below
In a spinal cord hemisection do you lose sense of pain and temp IPSI or CONTRA to lesion? Above or below?
CONTRA and Below
This will cause destruction of ascending and/or descending tracts resulting in sensory, motor or mixed deficiets.
Spinal cord transection
Where does Syringomelia occur?
around central canal
syringomelia is slow or fast growing disease?
slow
