Spinal Cord Lesions Flashcards
Which tracts are exta-pyramidal?
Reticulospinal
Vestibulospinal
Rubrospinal
Colliculospinal
Posterior spinal artery
supplies dorsal column (2 arteries, 1 for each side)
Anterior spinal artery
supplies anterolateral part (only 1 artery suppling both sides)
Small Central Lesions result in loss of…
Spinothalamic (pain & temp)
Bilateral - because lesion is where they cross over
Small Central Lesions are common in the ____ spinal cord, resulting in this symptom pattern
Cervical
Shawl pattern
Large Central Lesions result in loss of…
Mechanosensation - bc dorsal columns now blocked too.
Still also same symptoms as Small Central Lesions
Syringomyelia
Cyst in central spinal cord (often C-Spine).
Progressive growth can = compromised ascending + descending paths, loss of mechanosensation.
Dorsal Column Lesions result in loss of…
Mechanosensation
May be unilateral or bilateral
Tabes Dorsalis
Form of syphilis, Dorsal Column Lesion.
Bilateral loss of Mechano + Proprio.
2 major symptoms of Tabes Dorsalis
Sensory Ataxia gait pattern: wide stance, gaze down, stomping.
Romberg’s Sign: lose balance with standing w/ feet together + eyes closed.
Brown Sequard - how is mechanosensation affected?
Ipsilateral loss
Below level of lesion
Brown Sequard - how is pain/temp affected?
Contralateral loss
Below level of lesion
Brown Sequard - where does UMN Syndrome occur?
Ipsilateral
Below level of lesion
Brown Sequard - where does LMN Syndrome occur?
Ipsilateral
At level of lesion
