Spinal Cord Injury Flashcards
what is a cause of an axial loading injury
diving
which neurotransmitter is released excessively killing neurons
glutamate
spinal injury impairment scale - no motor of sensory preserved
A
spinal injury impairment scale - sensory is preserved below injury but motor is not
B
spinal injury impairment scale - motor is preserved below injury w/ weakness in > 1/2 of key muscles; pt cannot walk
C
spinal injury impairment scale - motor is preserved below injury w/ weakness in at least 1/2 of key muscles; walking is possible
D
spinal injury impairment scale - motor & sensory normal
E
what type of fibers innervated abdominal & thoracic organs
sympathetic
what type of fibers innervate smooth muscles of the bowel, bladder, & reproductive organs
parasympathetic
what is the immediate response to cord transection
spinal shock
s/s - flaccid paralysis, loss of temp control & perspiration
spinal shock
condition - loss of pain & temp on opposite side, loss of motor control on the same side as injury
lateral cord syndrome
condition - loss of motor, pain & temp; keep sense of position, vibration, & touch
anterior cord syndrome
condition - motor deficits in upper extremities; possible bowel/bladder dysfunction
central cord syndrome
condition - hyperreflexia or exaggerated sympathethic response to noxious stimuli
autonomic dysreflexia
bladder - injury above T12 - no sensation of urinating, constant leak of urine
reflex bladder
bladder - injury below T12 - bladder gets very distended before becoming incontinent
flaccid bladder
bowel - injury above sacral region - always leaking stool
reflex bowel
bowel - injury at sacral region - no BM until bowel very full
flaccid bowel
