Spinal Cord Injuries Flashcards
What is on the checklist for clearing the C-spine? (NB - all of these have to be met before the C-spine can be cleared, so remember all of them!)
No history of loss of consciousness
GSC of 15 with no alcohol intoxication
No significant distracting injury
No neurological symptoms in the upper or lower limbs
No midline tenderness on palpation of the C-spine
No pain on gentle active neck movement
What is spinal shock?
How long does it typically last and the return of what reflex signifies its end?
Physiological response to major injury resulting in complete loss of sensation, motor function and reflexes below the level of the injury
Usually resolves within 24 hours
Return of the bulbocavernous reflex signifies end of shock
How can the bulbocavernous reflex be stimulated?
Tightening of the anal sphincter in response to…
- squeezing the glans of the penis
- tapping the mons pubis
- tugging on the urinary catheter
What are the two classifications of spinal cord injury?
Which has the better prognosis?
Complete - total loss of all sensation and function. Poor prognosis
Incomplete - partial loss of function/sensation with evidence of some sparing in the spinal cord. Better prognosis
What are some examples of incomplete spinal cord injury?
Central Cord Syndrome
Anterior Cord Syndrome
Posterior Cord Syndrome
Brown-Sequard Syndrome
