Pathology in the Elbow Flashcards
What range of motion do the following joints allow for?
- Humero-ulnar joint
- Radio-capitellar joint
Humero-ulnar = flexion/extension of the elbow
Radio-capitellar = supination/pronation of the forearm
What does the triceps insert into?
What is this muscle’s nerve supply and chief function?
Olecranon process of the ulna
Nerve supply = radial nerve
Chief function = extension of the elbow
Where does the brachialis insert into?
What is this muscle’s innervation and chief function?
Inserts into the coronoid process of the ulna
Innervation = musculocutaneous nerve and radial nerve
Chief function = flexion of the elbow
What muscles supinate the elbow?
Biceps brachii and the supinator muscle
What muscles pronate the elbow?
Pronator teres and Pronator quadratus
What is the a) common extensor origin and b) common flexor origin for muscles of the forearm?
Common extensor origin = lateral epicondyle of the humerus
Common flexor origin = medial epicondyle of the humerus
Tennis elbow affects the (medial/lateral) epicondyle
Golfer’s elbow affects the (medial/laterl) epicondyle
Which is more common?
Tennis = lateral (extensor origin), caused by repeated resisting of wrist extension
Golfer = medial (flexor origin)
Tennis elbow is more common
(OA/RA) most commonly affects the elbow
RA commonly affects the elbow
OA typically doesn’t affect the elbow (unless there is a history of trauma)
What is the weight limit than can be lifted by someone that has had an elbow replacement?
2.5 kg
