Spinal Cord and Brainstem Flashcards
corticospinal tract path
pyramidal cell in cortex → goes through corona radiata (upper motor neuron) → basal ganglia → internal capsule → midbrain → pons → medulla
Corticospinal tract purpose
movement information carried from the cortex to the spinal cord and controls the muscles
roles of cerebrospinal fluid
Protection
Buoyancy
Nutrition
Waste Removal
Spinal Cord segments
Cervical (C1-C8): fingers, neck, shoulders
Thoracic (T1-T12): hands, torso
Lumbar (L1-L5): hips, hamstrings, feet
Sacral (S1-S5): genitals
Coccygeal (Coc1)
spinal cord grey/white matter
Cervical: mostly white matter
Thoracic: mostly white matter, little grey matter
lumbar: even grey and white
Sacral: mostly gray matter
Ascending Dorsal columns path
Cutaneous receptors in skin –> gracile (lower) and cuneate(upper) fasciculi carry the info up (primary neuron) –> synapse on the gracile and cuneate nuclei in the lower medulla –> decussation in the lower medulla–> medial lemniscus (secondary neuron) travels up spinal cord –> synapses on ventral posterolateral nucleus in thalamus –> tertiary neuron continues and synapses on postcentral gyrus in the cortex
Dorsal tract purpose
info about touch and proprioception
Spinal Cord Dorsal Horn
Secondary sensory neurons
Spinal cord ventral horn
motor neurons
cranial nerves
carrying sensory/motor info from face/head to brain
divisions of the brainstem
midbrain, pons, medulla, spinal cord
