Spinal Cord’s vertebrae
surrounded by 33 vertebrae
- 7 cervical
- 12 Thoracic
- 5 Lumbar
- 5 Sacral
- 4 fused vertebrae in Coccyx
Spinothalamic tract
Originates in SC, goes to thalamus
Pain, Temp, Sensation
Posterior grey horn
Sensory
grey matter
Anterior grey horn
Motor
grey Matter
Upper and Lower Motor Neurons
Upper in brain and spinal cord activates lower motor neurons which are the periphery
even though lower originate in CNS also
Spinothalamic Tract
Originates in spine, to thalamus
Pain, Temp, Sensation
Upper Motor Neurons
in brain and spine, activate lower motor neurons Carry impulses from cerebral cortex to anterior gray column of spinal cord damage results in: Increased muscle tone, Decreased muscle strength decreased coordination hyperactive reflexes spastic paralysis
Lower Motor neurons
Have direct influence on muscles
Cell bodies originate in grey matter of spinal cord but axons extend into the PNS
Destruction leads to permanent paralysis
Peripheral Nervous System
Links CNS and body
Responsible for receiving and transmitting info from and about environment
Composed of nerves, ganglia and sensory receptors outside of CNS
Divided into sensory (afferent) and motor (efferent)
