Spinal Cord Flashcards
Conus Medullaris
inferior end of the spinal cord
Filum Terminale
long filament of CT extending from the conus medullaris down to coccyx. Anchoring
Cuada Equina
collection of spinal nerve roots in inferior end of vertebral column
Cervical and Lumbar enlargements
where nerves for upper and lower limbs arise
Spinal nerves
31 8 cervical 12 thoracic 5 lumbar 5 sacral 1 coccygeal
the spinal cord segements are where each nerve emerges. The nerve emerges superior. ex: spinal cord nerve T5 is located at the level of vertebra T4.
White matter Funiculi
white matter on each side of the spinal cord. “long ropes”. divided into :
dorsal (posterior)
ventral (anterior)
lateral
Commisural fibers
carry info from one side of spinal cord to the other
Gray matter of Spinal Cord
Form a ‘butterfly’
unmyelinated axons.
has narrow central cavity
Dorsal horns
posterior wings. smaller. responsible for sensory half- somatic and visceral
Ventral Horn
anterior wings. Larger. motor half- motor neurons send their axons out via these to supply muscles and glands. responsible for visceral autonomic and somatic motor.
Damage to this area will cause paralysis of skeletal muscles
Lateral horn
small lateral columns. only in thoracic and superior lumbar
Dorsal Root Ganglia
sensory neuron cell bodies that lie outside the spinal cord
Dorsal Horn Interneurons
receive info from sensory neurons
Parathesia
damage to the dorsal horn or sensory nerve cell bodies. Causes loss of sensory function
