Cerebellum Flashcards
Cerebellum
Smooth and coordinates body movements directed by other brain regions. Refines movements and has a motor memory. posture and equilibrium two hemispheres connected by the vermis folia, arbor vitae 3 lobes: anterior, posterior, floccuonodular
Cortex
outer gray
deep cerebellar nuclei
gray. realy info from cerebellar cortex to other parts
arbor vitae
internal white matter. carries info from the cerebral cortex.
smooths out movements
Types of information (3)
- equilibrium- relayed from inner ear via vestibular nuclei (VIII) to flocculonodular lobe
- current movement of body- proprioreceptors via olivary nuclei. received by medial part of anterior and posterior lobes.
- cerebral cortex- pontine nuclei to lateral portions of the anterior and posterior lobes
cerebellar peduncles
3 thick tracts that connect to cerebellum to the brain stem
superior peduncle
connect to midbrain. carry info away and to cerebral cortex
middle peduncle
connect to pons. carry info into cerebellum from cerebral cortex via pontine nuclei
inferior peduncle
arise from medulla and carry fibers from vestibular nuclei (equilibrium) and spinal cord (proprioception) via olivary nuclei
Injury (all lobes)
anterior/posterior- decreased coordination
flocculonodular- decreased equilibrium
