Diencephalon Flashcards
1
Q
Thalamus
A
80% of diencephalon.
- relay center for incoming sensory messages
- all afferent impulses EXCEPT olfactory converge at thalamus. The thalamus nuclei then organizes, amplifying or scales down signals
2
Q
Thalamus nuclei
A
ventral posteriorlateral. Relay station for sensory info ascending to the primary sensory ares of cerebral cortex.
3
Q
Thalamus nuclei- medial geniculate body
A
auditory
4
Q
Thalamus nuclei- lateral geniculate body
A
visual
5
Q
Hypothalamus
A
inferior to thalamus. Between optic chiasm and posterior border of the mamillary bodies.
pituitary gland
main visceral control center of body
control sleep-wake– superchiasmatic nucleus
6
Q
Hypothalamus- pre optic nucleus
A
response to superchiasmatics nucleus to induce sleep
7
Q
Hypothalamus- mamillary bodies
A
arousal from sleep. Relay of impulses from amygdala and the hippocampus
8
Q
Hypothalamus functions
A
- endocrine
- autonomic nervous system
- body temperature
- hunger/thirst
- feeding (initiating= lateral, inhibiting = ventromedial)
- emotion- pleasure, sex, rage
- motivation
- memory( mamillary)
- sleep wake
9
Q
Epithalamus
A
pineal gland
- influenced by the hypothalamus
- melatonin
- contributes to circadian rhythms
