First 3 sections (24 Vertebrae), are separated by?
Thick fibrous cartilaginous structures called intervertebral discs form strong joints which allow a degree of movement. Absorbs vertical shock.
The 5 Sacral vertebrae?
They are fused to form the Sacrum, joints between are fused (fibrous and immovable).
Coccyx
The 4 bones of the Coccyx are also fused. (Fibrous and immovable.
What is Neutral Spine?
The natural curvature of the spine allows for correct muscle alignment and optimal movement.
Spinal ligaments Anterior.
Sit anterior to the vertebrae column, help maintain stability, help prevent and resist hyperextension. (excessive extension)
Spinal ligaments Posterior
Weaker than anterior ligaments, help to prevent and resist hyper flexion/excessive flexion of the vertebrae column and posterior protrusion of the nucleus pulposus of the intervertebral disc.
Structure of a vertebra
Each has a spinal canal, spinal cord runs within. 2 facet joints on either side which connect adjacent vertebrae and are gliding synovial joints. Cartilaginous disc between each pair of vertebrae.
