Introduction to Joints. Flashcards
1
Q
What are joints (articulations).
A
They are functional junctions between bones (320 joints in the body).
2
Q
3 Types of Joints.
A
Immovable - Fibrous
Slightly Moveable - Cartilaginous
Freely Moveable - Synovial
3
Q
Planes of Movement
A
Sagittal, Frontal & Transverse.
4
Q
Sagittal Plane
A
Flexion and extension normally occurs in this plane. e.g. bicep curl, leg extension as curl etc.
5
Q
Fontal Plane
A
Abduction, Adduction and lateral extension are frontal plane movements. e.g. shoulder press, lateral raise, lat pull down and side bends.
6
Q
Transverse (Horizontal)
A
Rotation occurs in this plane, when the shoulder joint ‘rotates’ around the body such as a chest flye, bench press (wide grip) clapping hands etc.
