Spill Casualty Flashcards
Types of spills
Wet:
Dynamic- water flows
Static spill- water no longer escaping
Dry:
Dry material spread across the surface
Risk of re-suspension and inhalation
Article 803
used for response to spill
Stop spill
Warn others
Isolate area
Minimize exposure
Secure or redirect ventilation
Stop spill
Upright container
considered stopped when material is sufficiently contained to prevent further spread
Wipe up small amounts of liquids with absorbent material
Avoid self-contamination
Warn Others
Shout “There’s a spill here”
Notify RADCON and ELT’s
Follow ship’s emergency bill
Keep unnecessary personnel away from spill
When isolating the area:
Keep personnel out of area to minimize contamination
close hatches
set boundaries (large enough to contain, not impede access)
Minimize exposure
Moving to edge of affected area
Do not spread contamination by leaving area
Remove wet contaminated clothing, directed by ELT
Avoid hand to mouth
Redirecting Ventilation
Minimize potential generation of airborne radioactivity
- prevents air from blowing particles across the spill into other compartments
Minimize spread of contamination
-HEPA filters ventilation systems can remove finely divided radioactive particles
- these filters must then be treated as radioactive waste
Supplemental spill actions
Injured personnel are priority
Minor injuries-
Prevent internal contamination
minimize skin dose
control spread of contamination
Evac- First priority
wetted clothing removed
Decon
Determine extent of casualty
- Rad levels in affected area
- radioactivity in affected area
- take radiological control actions to recover from the casualty
Supplemental spill Action
Samples
Swipes/Frisks w/ 304 probe
Air samples, 0.3 cubic meter Portable Air Sample at spill boundary
- 100ccm=1x10(-9) per ml
Supplemental spill action
Counting station
MFR- 304
Survey Map
Swipes
Phone Talker
Decontaminate Area
lowest to highest contamination
transition from casualty to CSCA with CPA
Perform surveys between decon efforts to asses effectiveness
Dispose of RAM
in Yellow Polu plastic bags, anything being removed must be frisked upon exit
Final Survey
perform survey
must be less than 100 uuCi/100cm2
Contents of spill kit
Staged in areas where radioactive spills are probable to occur
Yellow poly bags
Green poly bags (non-radioactive waste)
