Spheres of the earth Flashcards
What is Biosphere?
All the living things on earth Like humans, plants, animals, bacteria…
What is Lithosphere/Geosphere?
The lithosphere is the solid part of the earth. Like the earth’s crust, rocks, mountains, volcanoes, and mantle.
What is Hydrosphere?
All the water in the planet. Like glaciers, rivers, beach, ice, swamps…
What is atmosphere?
Atmosphere is the gas layers around earth. It seals the planet but allows sun radiation to enter. Like clouds, air particles, oxygen, air.
What are the 5 layers of the atmosphere?
- Troposphere=weather, planes, clouds
- Stratosphere= ozone layer
- Mesosphere
- Thermosphere
- Exosphere
What are the main gases in the atmosphere?
78% nitrogen
21% oxygen
1% other gases
List 5 common lab safety practices?
- Don’t drink and eat in a lab.
- Wear safety googles when doing experiment
- Never leave the Bunsen burner unattended.
- Don’t run in a lab
- Wear appropriate clothing/ tie your hair up.
What is an Hazard?
Hazard is a risk or possibility of something going wrong. So, it is something we do wrong in the science lab that could increase the risk.
Why is drinking in the lab a hazard?
The person can get chemicals on their straw.
What are the steps to light a Bunsen burner?
- Tie your hair and wear safety goggles.
2.. place the Bunsen burner on a heat proof mat. - Attach a hose to the Bunsen Burner. The attach the other side of it to the gas tap/vent.
- Then, make sure the collar is closing the air hole.
- Turn on the gas vent, and light a match to ignite , this will produce a yellow flame (safety flame).
- Finally, when you are ready, rotate the collar so that the air hole open to produce a blue flame.
What is blue flame and yellow flame?
Yellow flame is the safety flame. It is what we should start with when setting up the Bunsen burner. Yellow flame result in complete combustion. (easy to spot)
Blue flame= Complete combution. It is hot and hard to see.
What is Mortar and Pestle Used for?
Grind/crush/smash small chucks of elements into small pieces or powder.
What is spatula used for?
Scrapping, transferring, or applying powder and paste-like chemicals.
What is Metallic tongs used for?
Hold hot equipment or items. Especially heat resistant items used in high temperature chemical reaction.
What is Gauze Mat used for?
Gauze mat is a rectagular net shaped mat that sits on tripod. Supports beaker or flask while its been heated by a bunsen burner. Heat something up evenly.
Test tube purpose
Holds liquid, test and combine 2 or more substance together.
What is thermometer do?
Measures the temperature of solutions.
What does Retort stand and Clamp used for?
Holds apparatus upright
Test tube rack
Hold test-tubes
Measuring cylinder Used for?
Accurately measure the volume of the substance. Measure at the bottom of the meniscus.
What is tripod used for?
Support the apparatus during heating?
What is evaporating dish used for?
Heat and evaporate liquids
Funnel purpose
Pour solutions into small opening easily
Stirring rod
Glass stick used to stir/mix liquids/ liquid and solids.
Bung
Seal liquid by closing the test tube
Conical Flask
hold, heat substances.
Pipette Used For?
Measure small amounts of liquids and transfer it somewhere else.
Beaker
Hold liquids and used to approximately measure solutions.
Heat proof mat
Used to prevent any damage done to the surface from hot objects
Clay-triangle
Used to hold (crucible) while being heated in a Bunsen Burner. Heat is not evenly distributed like the gauze mat.
Crucible items meaning
non-melting items which are used to heat solids at high temperature.
