Speed and Acceleration Flashcards
displacement
a measure of how far the finishing point is from the starting point. it also states direction
vector quantities
state both magnitude (size) and direction ( e.g. up, 214 degrees, east, right, etc)
scalar quantities
state magnitude (size) but no sense of direction. (e.g. mass, temperature, time, distance)
average speed formula
speed=distance/time
v=s/t
symbol and unit for speed/velocity, distance/displacement, time, acceleration
speed/velocity: v, m/s
distance/displacement: s, m
time: t, s
acceleration: a, m/s^2
how fast is a tractor travelling if it takes 2m30s to cover 3km?
20m/s
typical speeds
walking: 1.5m/s
running: 3.0m/s
cycling: 6.0m/s
distance
how far an object moves when travelling from one point to another. distance has no indication of direction
instantaneous speed
the speed at any one given point
acceleration formula
acceleration=change in velocity/time taken
a=v-u/t
i am walking at 1 m/s and speed up to 5 m/s. if it takes 8 seconds to do so, what is my acceleration?
0.5m/s^2
how do you find the acceleration on a velocity-time graph?
the gradient.
how do you find the area under a curve on a graph?
step 1: count the whole squares
step 2: count partially filled squares
step 3: all partial boxes count as half boxes
step 4: sum number of boxes x distance per box
how do you find the velocity/speed on a distance-time graph?
the gradient
