Q

2 types of speed + definition

A
  • *1) general speed**
  • performing any kind of linear movement quickly
  • foundation for specific speed
  • *2) specific speed**
  • performing a unique task or skill quickly
  • specific to a sport
  • non-transferable, tennis to track for example

Q

Factors affecting speed

A

1) Heredity: metabolic profile, muscle fibre type, nervous system + motor unit activation
2) reaction time
3) Technique (mechanics of movemet)
4) Psychological focus

Q

Speed vs velocity

A

Speed

  • Time rate of change of distance, scalar
  • Speed = D/T

Velocity

  • Time rate of change of displacement, vector
  • V = (position final - position initial) / (time f - time i)

Q

Linear kinematics

A

Position: physical location of object with respect to point of reference, unit in meters

Displacement: change in position (assumed to be rectilinear), vector quantity (magnitude + direction), unit in meters

Distance: total length of path of moving object, scalar (magnitude only)

Accel: time rate of change of velocity, vector, unit in m/s^2

Jerk: time rate of change of accel, vector, units in m/s^3

Q

What is a stride + rate & length?

A

Stride
- Heel contact to heel contact of same leg
- running speed = stide rate x stride length
Stride rate
- Number of strides per second
Stride length
- Linear distance per stride

A

period of time (second or milliseconds) elapsed between stimulus and a conscious motor response

Q

What is agility?

A
  • ability to changed direction rapidly and accurately

- “Whole body change of direction as well as rapid movement and direction change of limbs”

Q

What is quickness?

A
  • “Multiplanar or multi-directional skill that combines accel, explosiveness, and reactiveness
  • considered component of agility

Q

Agility can broken down into 2 main components

A

1) Perceptual and decision-making factors: experience with activity, neurmuscular learning potential?
2) Change of direction speed

Q

Study by Jones et al

A
  • investigation into physical determinants of change of direction speed
    • does linear sprinting speed influence agility?
  • *CODS**
  • change of direction speed
  • ability to decelerate, reverse, change movement direction and accelerate again
  • *Method**
  • used flying 5 m, 25 m sprint
  • and 505 agility test

Correlation + Predictability

  • CODS & strength have moderate correlation
  • Predictability is moderate to strong
  • Flying 5 m: 58%
  • Eccentric knee flexor: additional 9%
