What is an informative speech, give examples
This type of speech is based on facts and is objective in nature. The purpose is to explain or inform about something. It relies heavily on careful and systematic construction, since your audience is expected to learn or understand something.
EG:
Lectures
An explanation on how to use a product
A presentation by an authority/expert on a topic
What is a persuasive speech
Persuasive speeches are designed to change the audience’s opinions or endorse an opinion or belief that they already had. They are strong in tone and speakers are usually firm in their convictions.
EG:
Political speeches
Religious speeches
Advertisements
What is a debate
A debate is a formal method of interactive argument. It requires a presentation of two sides of an argument in a structured manner, following specific rules of conduct.
What are special occasion speeches?
These are speeches that are made at special occasions such as: weddings, funerals, birthdays and graduation ceremonies.
The speech must match the occasion, including whether it is a formal or informal occasion.
What are rhetorical devices?
rhetorical devices are words or phrases that are used to persuade or convince.

What is pathos
A rhetorical device that appeals to the audiences’ emotion
What is ethos
A rhetorical device that appeals to the speakers’ status of authority, making the audience more likely to trust them
What is logos
A rhetorical device that appeals to the audiences’ logic by using facts
What is kairos
A rhetorical device that identifies a critical moment/ right time to perform an action
What are the 4 methods of presenting speeches?
- Impromptu
- Manuscript

What is an impromptu speech?
An impromptu speech is unprepared and unrehearsed. They are generally short and given with little or no notice
EG:
Giving an introduction or a vote of thanks
Being asked your opinion
Being asked to answer a question
(PREP- Point, Reason, Example, Point)
What is a manuscript
This is when a speaker writes a speech and reads it word for word to the audience. Usually used when accurate info is presented
EG:
Newscasts
Presidential speeches
Eulogies
What is a memorised speech
This is when a manuscript is committed to memory and recited to the audience
