What is comprehension?
To comprehend means to understand the thoughts and ideas of a writer or speaker and to be able to apply these ideas in various contexts.
What are the 3 stages of comprehension?
Pre-reading/listening
During reading/listening
Post reading/listening
What happens pre-reading/listening?
This stage involves predicting the thoughts, events, and conclusions based on the cover book or the topic of the speech.
What happens during reading/listening?
This stage you are monitoring your comprehension by picturing images, relating the info to your own experiences, and re-reading or asking questions.
What happens post reading/listening?
This stage you consolidate what you have read/listened to by thinking about it, discussing it with others, and applying it in new ways and contexts.
What are the levels of comprehension?
Literal
Interpretive
Analytical
Synthesis
Evaluation
What is literal comprehension?
Literal comprehension requires you to understand the info that was stated. Questions that ask who, when, where, and what require this level.
What is interpretive comprehension?
This refers to understanding what is being implied rather than what is actually said. This could answer questions that ask how and why.
What is analytical comprehension?
Examining something critically by breaking it down into smaller parts to understand how it works.
What is application comprehension?
Apply general methods/principles to a new situation by using given info. This requires logic and writing.
What is synthesis comprehension?
Combine the elements into a new entity, integrate ideas, and change into a different format.
What is evaluation comprehension?
Making judgements and decision based on criteria and rationale
