indirect speech
a means of expressing the content without quoting it explicitly example : He said “I’m coming” (direct) He said (that) he was coming (indirect)
semi-indirect speech
same for as indirect, but with quotation marks, like in direct speech
free indirect speech
uses some of the characteristics of third-person along with the essence of first-person direct speech ex :He asked himself what pleasure he had found since he came into the world (indirect) And just what pleasure had he found, since he came into this world? (free indirect)
direct speech
the character’s words are presented between quotation marks and accompanied by a reporting verb
free direct speech
the character’s words are presented without quotation marks or reporting verb, often used for 1st person interior monologue or for dramatic monologue
