speech mech chapter 10 Flashcards
Afferent innervation
– carry impulses from the cochlea to the central auditory
nervous system (to brain)
– Type I large myelinated fibers make up 95% of VIII
nerve and innervate inner hair cells
– Type II small myelinated and unmyelinated innervate
outer hair cells
Efferent innervation
– project from the superior olivary complex and contact
the hair cells directly and indirectly (receive from the
brain)
– Inhibitory, reducing output by hair cell stimulation
– Helps detect signals in background noise
auditory mechanism
Processes the acoustic signals of
speech
auditory mechanism has an amazing
range of sound
pressures
* Has a frequency range of around 10
octaves spanning 20 to 20,000 Hz
– An octave is a doubling in frequency
