What is Aphasia
Partial or complete loss of speech and language skills.
Common causes of aphasia are?
Stroke (cva)
Head Injury
Brain tumors
What is receptive aphasia
Difficulty understanding language written or spoken
Speech is mixed and confusing
Cannot understand their own words spoken and don’t recognize their mistakes.
What is expressive aphasia
Can understand spoken or written words
Speech Is jumbled
Thinks one thing, but says something different
Cannot form the right words
Both receptive and expressive aphasia look like?
Some clients can only say minimal words or sounds (da-da), while some clients may have lost all speech. Difficulty speaking and understanding language - also know as global aphasia.
What is apraxia?
Motor speech In the Brain is damaged, so the brain can not properly coordinate muscles to produce speech. Although the muscles themselves are intact. Cannot control lip, jaw, or tongue movement
What are the signs of a person with apraxia
The person can understand speech and language
Brain cannot coordinate lip, tongue, and jaw movements
Speech is slow and inconsistent
May say words close to or that sound similar to but not what they were trying to say (“me” and “see”).
What does a person with apraxia sound like
Slow speech and inconsistent
What is dysarthria
Weakness or paralysis of the speech muscles , causing speech to be difficult.
What does someone with dysarthria sound like
People with dysarthria may slur their speech and talk in flat, harsh, or nasal tones. May have difficulty breathing while speaking.
What does dysarthria do to the person’s speech
It can cause problems with spacing words, and their speech errors are usually consistent and predictable. Over time, you may be able to learn what they are communicating.

Use communication methods that are best for your client
Be alert of signs of fatigue in your client , including lack of interest , irritability decline in understanding.

What tools are available to help people with speech and language disorders communicate?
Communication boards - pictures or words that show functions or tasks. Typically, pictures or words related to ADLs, like sleeping, eating, drinking, medicine, and glasses.
Mechanical and electrical devices -
These devices range in complexity and price. Large computers to hand-held portable devices (like an electronic talking aid or translator)
