SPEECH ACT Flashcards
an action preformeed when the speaker is saying something. It is the speaker’s utterances which convey meaning and make lsiteners do specific things.
speech act
The act of saying something. This happens when the speaker makes an utterance, which may have meaning.
Locutionary act
where something is said or a sound is made, and which may not contain any meaning.
Utterance Act
Where a particular preference is made
Propositional Act
The act perfomed in saying something. It is identified by an explicit performance.
illocutionary act
speaker expresses belief abou the truth of a proposition. “No one cooks better than I do.”
Assertive
speaker tries to make the listener perfom an action. “Please turn off the light.”
Directive
commits the speaker to future action. “From noe on, I will not procrastinate.”
commisive
makes the speaker express his or her feelings or emotional reactions. “Well done on that performance!”
expressive
this refers to the speech act that has an effect on the feelings, thoughts, or actions of the speaker. “ I was born a Filipino, I will live as a Filipino, I will die as a Filipino!”
Perlocutionary act
brings a change in the external situation. “you are now husband and wife.”
