Spectrum Of Conservation Stratergies Flashcards
Total protection
Main focus of conservation during 1960s
Criticised as:
-In developing there is conflict between conservation and cutting people off from biodiversity
-Totally protected areas narrowly focused on scientific research do not take into account social economic factors
-many schemes based on political boundaries and not the ecosystem natural borders
-These strategies rely on coordination of outside agencies which often forget about locals needs
Biosphere reserves
Core area which is heavily protected with buffer zones around it
Encourages ethical consumerism
Criticised as :
-some countries do not have funds to fully monitor or manage these reserves
-pressure from development difficult to control
Scientists and researchers
Work for a variety of organisations and monitor the state of biodiversity to inspire further conservation
Biosphere designation in the Galapagos helped implement a zoning strategy to solve problems in the area
Restoration
Includes recreating wetlands or linking up fragmented areas
Criticised as:
-very expensive
-much of the success depends on plant regrowth and how polluted the land is
Conservation
Ex situ : endangered species established population outside of natural habitat
Includes ;
Captive breeding
Biodiversity banks
In situ: species and natural habitat protected
