spectroscopy Flashcards
what is electromagnetic radiation?
EMR = energy emitted from source (x-ray, light, etc)
what range does visible light range from?
400-750 nm, if calculated wrong, it will not be around these #
what is planck?
relates frequency (color) of light to the energy of photon (particle of life)
what is a releasing photon?
atoms excited = jump to next orbital above
what happens after an atom gets excited?
after excited, they fall back to original state and release a photon of light back out
how are wavelengths and frequency’s related?
higher frequency = shorter wavelength
lower frequency = longer wavelength
what are absorbing photons?
can only absorb if photon’s energy is exactly equal to the different in energy between 2 orbitals
what’s bohr’s postulates ?
e-can jump between different orbitals, however it cannot exist in between
- e- absorbs = jumps up
- e- releases = falls down
what is UV spectroscopy?
can excite e- and study the electronic structure of an atom
infrared photons ?
are absorbed by the bonds and cause vibration of different bond types
microwave spectroscopy?
use to determine bonds lengths and angles
what are microwave photons absorbed by?
absorbed by molecule and cause rotations of bonds
