Polarity and Electronegativity Flashcards
1
Q
How does electronegativity play a role in Larger atoms?
A
Larger atoms have a weaker hold on their valence electrons; they have lower electronegativity.
2
Q
What is Electronegativity?
A
The ability of an atom to attract the shared electron in the bond.
High electronegativity = Strong attraction/affinity for the electron (vice versa)
3
Q
Effects on Smaller Atoms when bonding?
A
Smaller Atoms have a tighter hold on their electrons, so when they bond they’re less willing to share electrons.
4
Q
Effects on Larger Atoms when bonding?
A
Larger Atoms have a looser hold on their electrons, so when they bond they’re more willing to share electrons.
5
Q
What are the three bond types?
A
- Large difference in electronegativity
- Equal electronegativity values
- Small difference in electronegativity
