Spectroscopic techniques Flashcards
1
Q
Raman spec
A
a form of vibrational spectroscopy using deflected light, scattering protons
2
Q
photons
A
interact with molecular vibrations in a material and are scattered
are little packets of energy
3
Q
Types of scattering
A
- elastic - leave in the same state as they entered (Rayleigh 10^7)
- inelastic - leaves the molecule in a different quantum state (Raman 1)
4
Q
types of raman
A
- stokes - photon/ light comes in, loses energy to molecule
- anti stokes - light comes in and takes energy from molecule
5
Q
molecular vibrations
A
- change in polarisation = Raman active
- change in dipole moment = IR active
6
Q
Raman vs IR
A
light scattering / IR absorption
change in polarisability / change in absorption
aqueous sample / non aqueous
little to no sample prep / sample prep
